In May 2022, CBMM | Niobium and Japan's JFE Steel signed a technical cooperation agreement to collaborate on the development of new stainless steel for renewable energy solutions and equipment. The collaboration aims to combine the technical expertise of the two companies to improve the adaptability of materials to facilitate the global energy transition. JFE Steel is a global leader in the stainless steel industry with more than half a century of production history and experience. Founded in 2003 by the merger of Kawasaki Steel Corporation and NKK Corporation, the company has independently developed a variety of stainless steel varieties that are widely used in various fields such as mobile transportation, infrastructure, energy, and white goods.

As a global leader in niobium products, Brazilian mining and metallurgical company CBMM | Niobium has been supporting the development of the steel industry for the past 67 years, helping relevant companies to develop original, sustainable and efficient steel materials. Stainless steel was one of the first materials to successfully demonstrate the benefits of niobium's stabilization and is one of the most widely used alloys of niobium, so the demand for niobium usage is growing every year. “The transition to more sustainable energy will require not only the reconfiguration of the energy production process but also the support of the corresponding material development and application. We believe that niobium-added stainless steel is a perfect choice because of its good performance at extreme temperatures, excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, and excellent manufacturing process performance.”
The agreement is valid for five years, and it is expected that by the end of the project, the new niobium-containing stainless steel will be validated and used globally. The signing of this agreement will further promote the joint development of sustainable solutions by Japan's JFE Steel and Brazilian mining and metallurgical company CBMM|Niobium.
