Where great corrosion resistance is required, tantalum is a wise choice. Despite not being a noble metal, tantalum has chemical resistance comparable to that of the noble metals. In spite of its body-centered cubic crystal form, tantalum is also quite simple to work with at temperatures well below room temperature. Because of this, it is a useful material in a variety of chemical processes. For instance, we manufacture heat exchangers for the equipment construction industry, riveted racks for the furnace industry, implants for the medical technology industry, and capacitor components for the electronics industry using our "unyielding" material.

Tantalum Sheet production process

High Purity Tantalum Sheet is almost all made using cold processing technique. Generally, Tantalum Ingots of 15 ~ 30cm will be cold forged into slab of 8~10m thickness, and then be cold rolled from such slab, the compression rate can be more than 95%.In industrial manufacture, two to four rolling mills typically roll the slabs into 0.63 to 1.2 cm thick plates with a typical width of 51 to 102 cm. To avoid oxides from developing on the surface, typical rolling is carried out at or close to room temperature. Due to recrystallization, which calls for hot rolling, the temperature will reach 1000 °C and a strong oxidation process will take place.

 

Practically all thick tantalum plates are heated in a vacuum during the annealing process.Since there is no phase change, the rate of heating and cooling is not important. Further rolling using a standard mill, often a multi-roll mill with four rolls. Because the Tantalum metal is very soft, caution should be taken to prevent scratches during processing and transportation.
