Basic properties and characteristics of zirconium:

Zirconium is a silvery white metal, and its powder is black. Zirconium shows good corrosion resistance in acid, alkali and other media like titanium. Zirconium alloys have good mechanical properties. However, the strength of zirconium alloys generally decreases with increasing temperature, and it will lose its excellent corrosion resistance above 500°C. Heat treatment of zirconium and zirconium alloys:

1. Annealing

The stress relief annealing temperature of pure zirconium after cold working (97% deformation rate) is about 300℃. In order to reduce its corrosion and hydrogen absorption rate and stabilize the structure, stress relief annealing is generally carried out after cold working. After stress relief annealing, the strength of zirconium alloy does not change much, but the plasticity is significantly improved. The recrystallization temperature is related to the deformation amount of cold working and the annealing time. The greater the cold working amount or the longer the annealing time, the lower the recrystallization temperature.

2. Quenching

Zirconium may undergo shear martensitic transformation when it is rapidly cooled. Generally speaking, zirconium and some zirconium-hafnium alloys can be hardened to a certain extent by quenching. For example, the tensile strength of zirconium bars containing 0.02%C, 0.03%O, 0.135%A1 and trace amounts of other impurities increases from 27.4 kg/mm ​​to 31.6 kg/mm ​​after quenching at 1000℃, and the strength will increase after tempering at 400℃.

 

Reaction of zirconium and its alloys with gases:

At room temperature, zirconium does not react with several gases in the air at all due to the production of a protective oxide film on the surface, and its surface can maintain its luster for an infinitely long time. Zirconium begins to react with oxygen at 200°C, with hydrogen at about 300°C, with ammonia at 400°C, slowly, and rapidly at 800°C, and with CO and CO2 at about 500°C. Since the reaction products can be fully or partially melted in zirconium, the mechanical properties of zirconium will change greatly.
