Nickel Titanium, also referred to as Nitinol or NiTi, belongs to a special category of alloys with shape memory. The material's remarkable qualities are the result of a thermoelastic martensitic phase change. The usual composition of nickel alloys is 55%-56% nickel and 44%-45% titanium. Manufacturing process

Due of the extremely precise compositional control needed and the extremely high reactivity of titanium, nitinol is extremely challenging to produce. Every titanium atom that joins with an atom of carbon or oxygen is an atom that is taken from the NiTi lattice, changing the composition and lowering the transition temperature. Today, the two main melting techniques are as follows:

a.Vacuum arc remelting

This is accomplished by creating an electrical arc between the raw material and a copper strike plate that has been water-cooled. High vacuum is used for melting, and the copper mold is water-cooled.

b.Vacuum induction melting

This is accomplished by heating the raw materials in a crucible (often made of carbon) using alternating magnetic fields. Likewise, a strong vacuum is used for this.

Although there are benefits to both processes, it has been shown that an industrial state-of-the-art VAR material has smaller inclusions than a state-of-the-art VIM one, which results in a higher fatigue resistance.According to other studies, VAR using extremely high-purity raw materials may result in fewer inclusions and a better fatigue behavior.

Nitionl Alloy Types

Nitinol falls into two main types. The first one is referred to as "SuperElastic" and is distinguished by exceptionally high recoverable stresses and kink resistance. The ability of Nitinol to restore a pre-determined shape when heated above its transformation temperature is what distinguishes the second category of alloys, called "Shape Memory" alloys. The first type is frequently used for spectacles and orthodontics (braces, wires, etc.). The first group is most helpful for actuators, which are utilized in a variety of mechanical devices.
