Among refractory metals, tantalum has the best low-temperature plasticity, with its plastic-brittle transition temperature below -196°C. The development of tantalum alloys must take into account the need to maintain the excellent low-temperature plasticity of tantalum. Tantalum alloys are mostly solid solution strengthened, but also use a combination of solid solution and precipitation strengthening to improve strength. Some of the elements adjacent to tantalum in the periodic table can be completely solid soluble in tantalum, and some have a large solubility. The replacement solid solution elements with the most obvious strengthening effect are rhenium, tungsten, zirconium, and hafnium. Adding elements in amounts that exceed a certain range can impair the low-temperature plasticity of tantalum. It is generally believed that the percentage of atoms added should be less than 12 to 14%. The interstitial elements nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen have little effect on improving the strength of tantalum, but make the low-temperature plasticity and processing plasticity of tantalum significantly impaired. These interstitial elements have a significant strengthening effect only when they form a diffuse precipitation phase with the active element zirconium or hafnium.


To manufacture rod products, the material is first forged or extruded to intermediate moderate sizes of a representative cross-sectional yield of 70-90%, and then annealed and heat-treated.  The wire is processed using a normal-shaped wire-drawing machine. Because the tantalum material is very soft and easily scratched, surface problems with the drawing are significant and the fabricator must pay special attention to surface condition and lubrication.


Application: Because of its good corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance and good strength, impact toughness, plasticity, and excellent processing properties as well as good affinity with the human body, the tantalum rod itself is used as the main raw material for various tantalum processing materials such as tantalum targets, high-temperature resistant products, etc. It is widely used in petroleum, chemical, textile, electronics, manufacturing, and commodity processing industries.
