Inspection method:They usually arrive from the supplier in polished silver condition. They resemble polished iron or nickel crucibles very closely. If they are confused with iron or nickel crucibles, they can be identified by tapping them with a pencil or scraper and listening for the tone produced. Zirconium crucibles produce a pleasant, almost musical tone when struck.

Zirconium crucibles can be used for peroxide melting, often at 550°C, when about 2mg of zirconium enters the melt per melt. Its tarnish is lower than that of iron, nickel, silver crucibles and even platinum crucibles. A crucible can generally be melted 100 times. Zirconium crucibles cause less tarnishing of common impurities and are an excellent crucible for sample processing.
