Introduction of Hafnium

Hafnium is a bright silver-white metal with a melting point of 2227℃, a boiling point of 4602℃, and a density (20℃) of 13.31 g/cm3. Pure hafnium is plastic, easy to process, resistant to high temperatures and corrosion, and is an important material for the atomic energy industry.

Hafnium wire is made by electron beam melting of hafnium crystal bars into ingots, and then forging, rolling, and drawing. In nature, there is no single hafnium mineral. Hafnium always coexists with zirconium. The hafnium content of the coexisting zirconium mineral is generally only 1%-2% of zirconium, and only some minerals have a hafnium content of up to 5%. The preparation process of hafnium is complex and the amount is small, making it a veritable rare metal.

Preparation process of hafnium wire

First, hafnium oxide is chlorinated to generate hafnium tetrachloride, which is then reduced to hafnium sponge.

Second, it is vacuum smelted into hafnium ingots, which are then hot forged into hafnium rods.

Finally, the hafnium rods are hot rolled into rolled rods, which are then rotary forged into rotary forged rods, and then drawn into hafnium wire.
