Niobium target, niobium chemical symbol Nb, atomic number 41, atomic weight 92.90638, belongs to the periodic system V.B family. In 1801, C. Hatchet of England isolated the oxide of a new element from niobite and named the element columbium (coltium in Chinese translation).

Molybdenum (10%) niobium alloy sputtering targets have broad application prospects in thin-film solar cells and displays. However, due to the absorption of oxygen by the niobium powder during the sintering process, the molybdenum-niobium green body after sintering has high oxygen content and low density. This time, niobium powder with niobium carbon coating was prepared by chemical gas phase reaction under the CH4 atmosphere. The niobium carbon layer not only helps to block the absorption of oxygen but can also be completely consumed by reacting with oxygen at the desired temperature. The effects of the preparation method, reaction medium, and reaction parameters on the properties of the niobium carbon layer were studied, and the optimal process conditions were determined: temperature 600 °C, reaction time 270min, air pressure 0.04MPa.

The surface morphology, chemical composition, distribution, and uniformity of the coating were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron probe microscopic analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The oxygen and carbon content was determined with ONH and CS analyzers. The surface-modified niobium powder was mixed with molybdenum powder and vacuum sintered to obtain Mo-10% Nb blanks with an oxygen content of 190ppm, the carbon content of 290ppm, and a relative density of 93%. The quality of this blank is significantly better than that prepared with non-surface modified niobium powder.
