The transparent region of tantalum oxide particles is 0.3~10μm, and its refractive index is n=2.25 (λ=0.4μm), n=2.1 (λ=0.55μm, Ts=250 °C). Ta2O5 coating can be used as a high refractive index film material in interference coatings, its mechanical properties are extremely strong, and strong alkalis do not corrode. It can also be used as a protective coating, especially in applications at high temperatures.

Thin films can be prepared by various methods, such as thermal oxidation, electron beam evaporation, DC sputtering, reactive magnetron DC sputtering, RF sputtering, reactive sputtering, reactive RF sputtering, ion beam sputtering, ion plating, ion-assisted deposition, and anodizing. The optical properties of Ta2O5 films have also been reported in detail. The refractive index of Ta2O5 films prepared by different methods varies greatly, and the refractive index value can vary between 2.01-2.23 at a wavelength λ=0.55μm.
