Vanadium is a silvery grey metal with a melting point of 1890°C, a boiling point of 3380°C, and insoluble in water, it is a refractory metal, ductile, hard, non-magnetic, and resistant to hydrochloric and sulphuric acids and has better resistance to gas, salt, and water corrosion than most stainless steels, but the presence of small amounts of impurities, especially nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen, can significantly.


Vanadium is not oxidized in the air, but is soluble in hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid, and aqua regos, and is heated to 900-1300°C in nitrogen to produce vanadium nitride.
