As a result, research has been carried out at home and abroad into the preparation techniques of high purity vanadium and the mechanical properties and organisational characteristics of pure vanadium at high temperatures, particularly the detection of neutrons in vanadium wire as a key material for self-contained energy detectors. Preparation of vanadium:

  • Pure metallic vanadium is generally obtained by the reduction of vanadium pentoxide with potassium under high pressure. Most vanadium is a by-product of the processing of other minerals.

  • Pure vanadium can also be produced industrially by the reduction of vanadium pentoxide with aluminium and coke. Aluminothermic reduction involves the reaction of vanadium pentoxide and pure aluminium in a reaction bomb to produce a vanadium aluminium alloy. The vanadium alloy is layered at 2063 K and in vacuum to produce crude vanadium metal containing 94% to 97% vanadium.

High Purity Vanadium Wire Specific measures:
  • 1. Weigh 3000g of vanadium powder, add 3500ml of 30wt% HNO3 aqueous solution, stir into a slurry, add deionised water, stir and wash, stop adding deionised water with a neutral PH test paper.

  • 2. The acid washed vanadium powder is dried in a vacuum drying oven at 65°C for 12 hours to obtain vanadium metal pretreatment powder. The powder is pressed into shape using a cold isostatic press. The powder is packed into a long rubber mould sleeve, sealed and placed in a cold isostatic press. Under cold isostatic pressing the pressure is maintained at 280mph for 60 seconds and then placed in a vacuum medium frequency sintering furnace for vacuum sintering. The vacuum of the sintering furnace is 10-3pa and the sintering system is heated at 10°C/min with a holding temperature of 500°C for 30 minutes, 1000°C for 60 minutes and 1500°C for 150 minutes, cooling with the furnace.

  • 3. The sintered vanadium metal bars are slowly fed into the electron gun bombardment zone of the electron beam melting furnace. After melting, the vanadium metal drips down into a water-cooled copper crucible. The vanadium liquid drips into the crucible and slowly pulls the vanadium ingot down to form a φ50mm ingot, which is stripped to give a vanadium bar. The vanadium bars are forged in stainless steel ladles to protect the ingots and the ladles are welded in an argon atmosphere. The forging equipment is a 1000kg air hammer with a heating temperature of 1100°C, a holding time of 15 minutes, an initial forging temperature of 1100°C and a final forging temperature of 950°C. The vanadium bars are then thermally rotated and rotated using a rotary forging machine. The deformation rate passed was 15%, the heating temperature was 1000°C and the holding time was 7 minutes. At the end of the hot spinning forging, the covering is washed off with aqua regia, the skin is peeled off and a 6 mm diameter vanadium metal bar is processed.

  • 4. A cold drawing process is used. One-pass deformation is processed at 5% to 15% using a 1:2 mix of lubricant graphite powder and chlorinated paraffin, and a polycrystalline die is used for the drawing die. Vacuum annealing temperature of 850°C ~ 1050°C, holding time of 20min ~ 30min, annealing temperature decreases with the wire diameter. The annealing temperature decreases as the wire diameter decreases by: when the φ6mm metal vanadium bar is drawn to φ4.5mm, the annealing temperature is 1050°C and the holding time is 25min; when drawn to φ3mm, the annealing temperature is 1000°C and the holding time is 20min When drawn to φ2. 0mm, the annealing temperature is 950°C and the holding time is 20min, drawn to Φ1.5mm When the vanadium wire is cleaned by continuous electrolytic polishing with an electrolytic current of 5a, concentrated with a 6% WT NaOH solution in alkaline solution, and coiled at a speed of 3m/min.

  • 5.The resulting  was obtained by vacuum annealing at 850°C and a holding time of 15 minutes, and cooling with the furnace. The wire has a diameter of Φ1.40.005 mm. and passed an experimental test. The high purity vanadium wire had a purity of 99.9%, a tensile strength of ≥725mph, an elongation of ≥7.6% and a surface roughness of RA0.2.
