40% Niobium with Tantalum Introduction
Tantalum 40% Niobium Rod can be shaped into a variety of objects, including wire, rod, and pipe. Heat exchangers, thermocouple pipes, and chemical reaction vessels are the principal applications for Ta-40Nb pipes. The benefits of Ta-40Nb alloy include a high melting point, resistance to corrosion, and efficient cold processing. It is extensively employed in the chemical, atomic, aerospace, and other industries of industry.

Standard specifications for tantalum and tantalum alloy plates, sheets and strips:

The following covers the standard requirements for tantalum and tantalum alloy plates, sheets and strips of the following grades: R05200, R05400, R05255, R05252, and R05240. The various tantalum rolled products covered shall be formed using conventional extrusion, forging and rolling equipment normally used in metalworking plants. The material shall be made from vacuum arc or electron beam melted ingots or powder metallurgically consolidated unalloyed tantalum and shall be supplied in the annealed condition. A chemical analysis shall be carried out to determine the chemical composition of the material, which shall conform to the requirements for carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, iron, molybdenum, niobium, nickel, silicon, titanium, tungsten and tantalum. The mechanical properties of the material shall also conform to the specified tensile strength, yield strength and elongation limits, which shall be determined by means of longitudinal or transverse tension test methods.

Scope

1.1 The plate, sheet, and strip of tantalum covered by this specification are both unalloyed and alloyed.

1.1.1 Unalloyed tantalum, R05200, melt in a vacuum arc furnace or both

1.1.2 Powder-metallurgy consolidation with unalloyed tantalum and R05400

1.1.3 R05255, a tantalum alloy made in an electron-beam furnace or vacuum-arc melt or both, contains 90% tantalum and 10% tungsten,

1.1.4 Tantalum alloy R05252, 97.5 percent tantalum, 2.5 percent tungsten, vacuum-arc melt, or both, and

1.1.5 R05240, tantalum alloy, vacuum-arc melt or electron-beam furnace, 60% tantalum, 40% niobium.

1.2 The inch-pound numbers provided should be regarded as the standard. Mathematical conversions to SI units are provided in parentheses for informational purposes only and should not be taken as standards.

Rectangular targets:.04" to 1" thick, up to 23.62" wide, and up to 80" long (1mm up to 25.4 mm thickness, width up to 600mm, length up to 2000mm);
95% minimum recrystallization
Size of grains: ASTM 4 or finer
Surface finish: a maximum of 16RMs or Ra 0.4 ( RMS64 or better)
Flatness: maximum 0.1mm or 0.15%.
Tolerance for all dimensions is +/-0.010"
