Chemical properties

1. The properties of vanadium are similar to those of tantalum and niobium.

2. Vanadium is a medium-active metal. +5 valence vanadium is the most stable, followed by +4 valence. Pentavalent vanadium compounds have oxidizing properties, and low-valent vanadium has reducing properties. The lower the valence of vanadium, the stronger its reducing property.

3. Vanadium is resistant to hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid and is more durable than most stainless steels.

4. In the air, vanadium will not be oxidized and is soluble in hydrofluoric acid, nitric acid and aqua regia.
