Vanadium has similar properties to tantalum and niobium, and the British chemist Roscoe studied its properties and established that it was similar to tantalum and niobium, which established the basis for the three of them to share a sub-group in the periodic table. Vanadium is a moderately reactive metal with chemical valencies of +2, +3, +4, and +5. Of these, +5 is the most stable, followed by +4. Compounds of pentavalent vanadium have oxidizing properties, while lower valencies have reducing properties. The lower the valency the more reductive the vanadium.
